About
What we do…
Greater than Nothing offer high quality, standards based, web design services at reasonable prices. We create each sites design from scratch, so you get an entirely custom web site. You will get to comment and refine the design as you want, so you’re involved in every stage of the process.
We also offer training in many web design skills. Some information will be available on the tutorials section of the website, but we also hope to offer taught courses to companies and individuals.
Greater than Nothing web design, the story so far…
As an idea Greater than Nothing started in March 2005. It was then that the founder, Tom Lawton, decided that it would be good to have a more official front to his growing web design business.
I have been teaching computer related subjects since 1999, and started web design in 2001. In the subsequent years I designed quite a few websites in my spare time, whilst continuing to teach full time. I started up the web design courses at my college (Kingston Maurward College, Dorset, UK) which have proved hugely successful.
After a while I decided that I would need to setup a web design company to sell my talents directly to potential customers. After a long time pondering over a name I was doing some programming and the name Greater than Nothing came to mind as I was completing a conditional test to see if a value was still greater than zero. I also thought the name sounded pretty cool, and it was available! So I went ahead and registered the domain in 2005.
I started work on the site straight away but found that I was too busy completing projects for clients or teaching at college. This meant that the Greater than Nothing website kept getting put on hold. In 2006 I converted to Web Standards based design (if you’ve not yet been converted you really should, I will sell you on the idea if you want!!!). I now use only web standards based designs on all new sites. In 2008 I decided that I was going to get the site up and running, no matter what! I put together a template in Adobe Fireworks (my current graphics program of choice) and started work on the template. As I wanted to get the site up ASAP I decided to leave off the server-side code until later. And that brings us to the current day! I hope to add the server-side functionality very soon, and that’s when the site should become a more useful resource for anyone learning web design.
